Roma’s Curva Sud has become the setting for a disciplinary decision that reaches well beyond one afternoon at the Olimpico, with 16 Giallorossi supporters barred from football grounds after an investigation into events before the Atalanta match.
The decision
Rome’s police chief has issued DASPO orders against 16 Roma ultras aged between 19 and 42. The measures follow inquiries conducted by the Digos and Prati police station into a group who entered the Curva Sud wearing shirts carrying the Nazi-linked phrase “über alles”, then made Roman salutes and sang fascist chants before the game against Atalanta.
Each of the supporters had already been reported to the judicial authorities for an alleged breach of the Mancino Law, Italy’s legislation against racial, ethnic and religious discrimination as well as the dissemination of extremist ideas.
The bans range from one to five years and apply throughout Italy. They also prevent those sanctioned from attending Roma fixtures abroad, European competition matches and Italy national-team games.
The length of each ban reflects the individuals’ previous records. Several had already come to the attention of law enforcement over allegations including carrying weapons or objects capable of causing injury, threats, criminal damage, fighting and smuggling.
For one supporter handed the maximum five-year prohibition, this is a second DASPO. The case leaves Roma facing another reminder that the life around a club, particularly in the stands, can carry consequences far beyond the final whistle.
