Amsterdam’s rebuild has carried on beyond the formal close of the summer window, with Ajax adding former Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma on a free transfer. The 30-year-old Mali international has signed through June 2027 and will wear the number 28 shirt.
Ajax add Bissouma to a reshaped squad
Last season left Ajax with a clear sense that sporting change was required. Jordi Cruyff arrived as sporting director midway through the campaign, and the summer has since brought a major overhaul in the Dutch capital. Míchel Sánchez was appointed as head coach, while the squad received 11 new arrivals, including Marc-André ter Stegen and Julian Brandt.
Bissouma becomes the latest piece of that reconstruction despite the transfer market having closed. He joins after leaving Tottenham, where his final two seasons brought more attention away from the pitch than through regular influence in matches.
The midfielder presented himself as a competitor eager to contribute to Ajax’s new direction. “I am a winner and I want to win everything,” Bissouma said. “That is what I want, and I am ready to begin.”
He also stressed the value he places on his role within the dressing room. “I am always there for my teammates, to show them that we can improve and give more. That is part of me. I am not the coach, but I am here to do my part.”
