Alex Ovechkin Sets 2026-27 as His Final NHL Season

Alex Ovechkin’s farewell lap is now on the calendar. The Washington Capitals captain has told teammates that the 2026-27 campaign will be his final NHL season, setting up an emotional year for the League’s all-time leading goal scorer and the franchise he has carried for two decades.

A final season begins in Washington

Ovechkin will make his first home appearance of the season Wednesday when Washington opens at Capital One Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, with TNT and HBO Max carrying the game.

The Capitals-Penguins matchup gives the home crowd an immediate chance to mark the start of Ovechkin’s final run. He informed the club before the retirement decision became public.

Capitals voices salute their captain

Zach Leonsis, president and vice chairman of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, said the season will carry plenty of feeling while also serving as a chance to honor Ovechkin’s body of work.

“I know this season will be emotional, but it will also be a celebration of Ovi, of everything he has accomplished, and of the incredible journey we’ve been fortunate enough to share with him,” Leonsis said. He added that he wants to savor the final season alongside Ovechkin, Capitals fans and everyone connected to that journey.

Johnson looks back, then ahead

Wes Johnson, Washington’s longtime public-address announcer, has been behind the microphone throughout Ovechkin’s Capitals career. He reflected on the star’s impact from his first NHL goal through the milestones still possible in the season ahead.

“From the first goal to whatever wonderful things happen this season, this man has made hockey fun, special and epic not just in the DMV, but around the world,” Johnson said. “Thanks Alex. Let’s unleash one more time.”
