Brisbane Road saw London City Lionesses make another emphatic statement in the Women’s Super League, sweeping past Tottenham 6-1 to claim a third straight league win. Alexia Putellas set the tempo in east London, scoring twice as Eder Maestre’s side moved into second place after five rounds.
Alexia leads London City’s surge
The former Barcelona captain had opened her account for London City in the previous weekend’s 2-0 victory over Brighton. Against Spurs, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner went a step further with her first English double.
- Putellas struck after only three minutes, collecting the loose ball after Tottenham’s goalkeeper had repelled an earlier effort and finishing across goal.
- Kadidiatou Diani doubled the visitors’ advantage midway through the first half, with Lucía Corrales providing the pass.
- Before the interval, Putellas scored again. Daniëlle van de Donk supplied the ball and the Spaniard struck a first-time left-footed finish from inside the area to make it 3-0.
- Van de Donk extended the lead after the restart for Maestre’s team.
- Pelova gave Tottenham a response soon afterwards, but it did not halt London City’s momentum.
- Diani completed her own brace in the 74th minute.
- Cascarino added the final goal in stoppage time, sealing the 6-1 result.
Spanish contingent involved in a fifth straight win
London City’s squad again carried a strong Spanish presence. Lete started in goal, while Jana Fernández, Mapi León and Corrales were also in the starting XI. Daniela Arques and María Pérez entered from the bench.
The result was London City’s fifth successive victory in all competitions, combining three league successes with two League Cup wins. They now have 12 points from five Women’s Super League matches, one behind leaders Chelsea.
Manchester City could still affect the immediate picture when they meet Arsenal later on Sunday, with that match scheduled for 17:00.
