Napoli’s second defeat has arrived at an awkward point in the season, against Serie A’s bottom club Venezia, but Massimiliano Allegri has asked his squad to resist anxiety and respond through work. With a Champions League meeting against Bodo/Glimt due on Tuesday, the coach sees a side with time to recover domestic ground, provided it can turn its chances into goals.
The coach and the club
Allegri had not spoken to president Aurelio De Laurentiis after the loss, though he said he understood the mood around the club. His message was one of discipline rather than alarm: Napoli must continue working with commitment, professionalism and the determination to improve.
“There are periods in football when things simply do not go your way,” Allegri said. “We have to work seriously, do better than our opponents and take the opportunities we create. The danger now is that the situation affects us mentally. We need pride and character ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match.”
The coach insisted that worry, by itself, offers no solution. Napoli need to remain composed and make the small moments fall in their favour again. Unlike the previous European outing, when Allegri felt his team lost its order, he believed they stayed clear-headed against Venezia and produced enough attacking situations to change the afternoon.
“The quality is there,” he said. “Sometimes incidents go against you in football, but we have to keep a positive outlook.”
A difficult afternoon against Venezia
Venezia defended firmly, particularly before the interval, yet Napoli still found promising openings that they failed to use. Allegri said his players pushed the visitors back for long spells and that the second half was a markedly different contest.
Still, he linked the result to a pattern that has followed Napoli since the start of the campaign: costly mistakes at one end and insufficient finishing at the other. His view is that the team must face this phase with clarity, rather than allow frustration to define it.
“We have made errors all season and paid for them,” Allegri said. “We are not scoring, and we have to deal with this moment calmly. There is plenty of time to make up positions in the league.”
The setback came despite rotation against an opponent regarded as weaker on paper. Lorenzo Lucca started in place of Rasmus Hojlund, and Allegri defended his selection choices, saying he cannot rely on the same players every match when other members of the group train well and deserve opportunities.
He described Lucca as a good player facing a demanding situation, adding that Napoli’s squad contains footballers of differing qualities and profiles.
Fitness concerns before Bodo/Glimt
Alisson made a positive contribution after entering the match, but later appeared to feel discomfort in the back of his thigh. Allegri said the issue occurred when the player struck the ball and that the club would assess his condition.
The coach noted that Alisson possesses acceleration but needs patience as he is managed. He also referred to Neres, who has returned after eight months out and, while he has not suffered a new injury this season, has had several physical problems in the past.
Allegri’s conclusion remained steady despite the defeat: Napoli have other options available and must now show that their response can begin in Europe on Tuesday.
