Amanda Anisimova’s Singapore Tennis Open campaign ended before she struck a ball, with the second seed withdrawing on Tuesday because of a left wrist injury. The world No. 11 had received a first-round bye at the WTA 500 tournament and had been scheduled to meet Australia’s Talia Gibson in the second round.
Lucky loser Viktoria Morvayova moves into Anisimova’s vacant position in the draw and will play Gibson for a place in the quarterfinals. The withdrawal removes the highest-ranked player from that section as Anisimova had been chasing her first trophy of the season, following her title run in Beijing during last year’s Asian swing.
The 25-year-old American last played at the US Open in August, where Anastasia Potapova beat her in the third round. Anisimova has posted a 22-12 record on the WTA Tour this season.
Wang sweeps past Vekic as opening rounds continue
Xinyu Wang produced one of Tuesday’s sharpest performances, dismissing eighth-seeded Donna Vekic 6-1, 6-2. The Chinese player dominated from the opening games to secure a second straight win over Vekic, bringing their head-to-head series level at two victories each.
American Alycia Parks also moved into the last 16, beating lucky loser Mei Yamaguchi 6-4, 6-3. Parks will now have a chance to build momentum in a draw altered by Anisimova’s late exit.
Tatiana Prozorova survived a demanding three-set contest against Sofia Costoulas, recovering from a set down to win 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2. Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine joined her in the next round after overcoming Vivian Wolff 6-1, 7-6 (5).
