Manchester City’s future ownership has been thrown into sharper focus after Andy Burnham voiced concern about the possibility of the club’s Emirati backers leaving, on the same day the Premier League case against City reached a damaging conclusion.
The move
Burnham, Britain’s Prime Minister since July and the former mayor of Manchester, said he would be “very concerned” if Manchester City’s Emirati owners were to depart.
Speaking on Wednesday, the Labour leader pointed to the owners’ wider role in the city as well as the club’s rise on the pitch. Burnham led Greater Manchester from 2017 until June 2026.
“I would be very concerned to see them go,” he said. “They have been a major partner in Manchester’s transformation and, naturally, in making Manchester City the global club it is today.”
A verdict with major financial consequences
Manchester City were found guilty on Wednesday of 114 serious breaches of Premier League financial regulations covering the period from 2009 to 2018. An independent commission reached the decision, with sanctions still hanging over the club.
The Premier League’s report said City had used arrangements intended to artificially increase revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million, a figure given as €1.05 billion.
The prospect of punishment now adds another layer of uncertainty around one of English football’s dominant clubs, while Burnham’s comments underline the scale of anxiety surrounding the ownership question in Manchester.
