Barcelona’s early-season rhythm has given Anthony Gordon a quick sense of belonging. The 25-year-old England international arrived as Deco’s first signing of the campaign in a swift deal, and has already heard his name carried around Spotify Camp Nou. A first goal in blaugrana colours has yet to come, but his contribution to the opening weeks has been substantial.
Gordon has featured in seven matches, missing only the game against Racing. He has started five times and appeared twice from the bench while competing for a place with Karim Adeyemi. In that span, he has supplied four assists and also created the move that ended with Lejeune putting the ball into his own net.
“I feel very good,” Gordon said in a conversation with the club’s media. “I am enjoying getting to know the players and coaching staff, and everybody has made me feel welcome.”
Settling into Barcelona
Among his new teammates, goalkeeper Joan Garcia has become the player with whom Gordon has formed the closest bond. Marc Bernal, meanwhile, has been the squad member to make the biggest impression on him in training and around the club.
Gordon’s football education crossed the Merseyside divide before his senior breakthrough. He developed in Liverpool’s academy, then entered the professional game with Everton. Steven Gerrard remains his sporting idol, a natural reference point for a player whose route to Catalonia has taken him through English football and now into a dressing room built around Spanish and international talent.
He describes himself as a competitive player and has set the broadest possible target for his first Barcelona season: “to win everything.”
Life beyond the pitch is beginning to take on a local flavour too. Gordon is taking guitar lessons and studying both Catalan and Spanish. He says there is nothing about Barcelona he does not like, while New York is his preferred holiday destination.
His matchday routine includes pancakes before kick-off, and his favourite book is Relentless. He also keeps a journal, writing down his thoughts away from football.
The international break will offer a different set of surroundings. Gordon is due to meet Spain, Croatia and the Czech Republic twice with England, before returning to Barcelona still chasing that first goal and looking to extend an encouraging start in his new city.
