In Seville, a European night at La Cartuja ended with an unwelcome return home for Real Betis forward Antony. After Betis defeated FC Porto in the second round of the UEFA Champions League league phase, the Brazilian said his home had been burgled while he was at the match.
A difficult end to a European night
- Real Betis secured a significant victory over Porto at La Cartuja in their Champions League league-phase fixture.
- After the game, Antony reported through an Instagram post that intruders had entered his property and taken valuable belongings.
- The 14 October incident, he said, had caused particular distress because of the fear felt by his family inside what should have been their safest place.
Antony’s message focused less on the value of the items removed than on the emotional consequences of having his private space violated. He described the difficulty of seeing possessions earned through years of work taken by people unaware of the struggles behind them.
“What hurts most is not merely the material loss,” he wrote in essence. “It is the lack of safety in the place where we should feel most protected. It is seeing fear and uncertainty in the eyes of the people I love most.”
Family placed above possessions
The Brazil international said his anger and unease remained, but insisted that his family mattered more than anything that had been inside the house. He said he would be prepared to rebuild from the beginning if necessary, while regretting that those close to him had been forced to endure such an experience.
For Antony, the episode underlined that a home is defined by the people within it rather than the objects it contains. His determination to continue moving forward, he said, has not changed.
No public statement from Betis
Real Betis had not issued a public response to the reported burglary. Authorities are expected to investigate the events of the night of 14 October and establish who was responsible.
