In Osijek, where the Drava runs close to the old city and the Opus Arena has become a new stop on the Croatian football map, Armando León is making a persuasive case for wider attention. The 26-year-old Mexican helped NK Osijek recover a point against HNK Gorica, extending a productive opening to his first Croatian campaign despite the match record denying him a sixth league goal.
Gorica had taken the lead after 24 minutes through Jakob Pranjić, putting the visitors ahead in Osijek. The home side found their response after the interval from a corner, with León central to the move that brought the sides level.
León attacked the near-post area ahead of Stefan Perić, who had entered the game in place of scorer Pranjić. The Mexican made first contact with a left-footed effort from close range, but the ball took a slight touch from Perić before crossing the line. Osijek and several statistical services initially credited León, while Croatia’s Prva HNL registered it as a Perić own goal.
The distinction matters in the scoring charts, though not in León’s influence. Officially, he now has five goals and two assists, seven direct goal contributions in all. His latest contribution against Gorica counts as an assist under the league ruling.
A Mexican scorer finding room in Croatia
León’s strongest previous display came against Dinamo Zagreb, when he scored twice in Osijek’s 4-2 victory and also supplied his first assist of the season. He had already struck two goals in a 6-1 win over NK Rudeš in the second round, while he also featured on the scoresheet during the 4-1 defeat to HNK Rijeka.
Those returns place him joint fourth among the division’s leading scorers alongside Nail Omerović. Dion Drena Beljo leads the table with 10, five more than León’s official total. Yet León’s seven combined goals and assists leave him as the Mexican player currently producing most regularly in European football, even without a call-up to the Mexico national team.
From Ensenada to the Opus Arena
Born in Ensenada, Baja California, León began in Pachuca’s academy but did not make a senior appearance for the club. A short spell at Mineros de Zacatecas preceded his move into León’s youth structure, where he eventually reached Mexico’s top flight during the Clausura 2020 tournament.
His route did not immediately settle after that debut. He spent the Apertura 2022 and Clausura 2023 periods on loan with Alebrijes de Oaxaca in Liga de Expansión, then returned to León in 2023 without establishing a regular place.
In May 2024, he chose a less familiar European route by joining Rangers SC in Andorra’s second tier. He helped the club gain promotion and remained there for two years, departing with 43 goals from 56 appearances. Osijek signed him during the summer on a one-year agreement that includes an option to continue beyond its initial term.
For now, the move north-east across Europe is paying off. A disputed goal may not sit beside his name in the official records, but León’s mark on Osijek’s draw with Gorica was clear enough from the stands in Slavonia.
