Arsenal Host Lille as Champions League Injury Concerns Mount

Arsenal enter a Champions League matchday-two meeting with Lille at the Emirates Stadium carrying domestic momentum but a growing injury list, while the French visitors arrive hoping to break a long run of narrow European defeats against English opposition.

Arsenal seek to turn league form into European control

The Gunners are second in the Premier League and remain in contention to be winter champions. Their late 2-1 win over Leeds strengthened that position, following a 4-2 victory away to Ipswich and a 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

  1. Arsenal won 4-2 at Ipswich.
  2. They then lost 3-0 against Brighton.
  3. A 2-1 home success over Leeds followed, secured late in the game.
  4. They now return to the Emirates for Lille’s visit in the Champions League.

That Leeds win came at a cost. Bruno Guimarães, described as the key figure in the late victory, is unavailable after picking up a physical problem in that match. Piero Hincapie is also out after suffering an issue against Leeds.

The pair join Tzolis and William Saliba in Arsenal’s treatment room, leaving the home side with fewer options for a European night that matters early in the league phase.

Lille’s English test

Lille have lost each of their last seven Champions League matches against English clubs. Their most recent occasion without defeat in such a fixture came against Manchester United in November 2005, and six of those seven losses were decided by a single-goal margin.

The visitors’ recent results include a 2-1 defeat at Nice and a 1-0 win against Le Havre.

Davide Ancelotti’s start in charge has nevertheless offered encouragement. Lille sold two young prospects, Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City and Matias Fernandez-Pardo to Newcastle United, in deals worth a combined £130 million. Despite those departures, Ancelotti’s side won three of his first four matches and drew the remaining one 2-2 with Paris Saint-Germain.

That PSG result carried particular frustration: Lille led 2-0 deep into stoppage time before the game ended level.

Available options

Arsenal’s listed substitutes are Gill, Sajous, Srdanovic, Giroud, Shraoui, Kjaergaard, Önal, Nianzou, Verdonk, Cossier, Perrin and Diaoune.

With both clubs arriving at the Emirates less than an hour before kick-off, Arsenal’s task is to protect their domestic rhythm in Europe. Lille, meanwhile, face another English opponent with a chance to halt a sequence that has repeatedly left them one goal short.
