Arsenal’s Lille Win Fuels Arteta’s Premier League and Champions League Double Bid

Arsenal’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Lille has reinforced a season already moving at championship pace, with Mikel Arteta’s side recording eight wins from nine matches as they pursue another Premier League and European double.

The English champions, beaten finalists in last season’s Champions League, carried their domestic intensity into the tie against Lille and eventually pulled clear after a demanding opening spell. Mikel Merino, handed a starting place in midfield, said Arsenal’s rhythm and depth had worn down a well-prepared opponent.

“It was difficult because Lille are a very good side and they are organised extremely well,” Merino said. “The pace we play at in the Premier League allowed us to hurt them. Once we scored, they dropped a little and we were able to enjoy the game more.”

Competition driving Arsenal’s European push

Merino faces fierce competition for minutes in an Arsenal squad packed with options, but the former Real Sociedad midfielder sees that depth as an advantage rather than a concern.

Asked whether Arteta should be urged to select him more often, Merino laughed and said any help would be welcome, while stressing that he understands the reality of the group. “I know how the team works and we have an outstanding squad,” he said.

He described the battle for places as “a good problem” for the manager, adding that the level remains high regardless of who comes into the side. “Whatever I am needed for, I am here,” he said.

The Spain international also believes his contribution extends beyond matchday selection. He sees a role in the dressing room and in helping Arsenal’s younger players, saying he is ready whenever required and has worked to adjust to the manager’s needs.

Expectations rise after last season’s run

Arsenal’s title-winning campaign and route to the Champions League final have raised the pressure around this season’s team. Merino said the standards at the club are felt every day, particularly under Arteta and with major trophies again the stated target.

For Arsenal, Merino made clear, merely competing will not be enough. The club’s plans are built around winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Zubimendi concern played down

Merino also moved to ease concerns over Martin Zubimendi after the midfielder picked up an ankle problem during an incident involving his teammate in training.

He said the contact had been accidental and insisted there was no intention to hurt Zubimendi. Merino described him as exceptionally tough and expects him to recover quickly.

With Lille dispatched and eight victories already secured from nine games, Arsenal’s European week has underlined the scale of their ambition: a squad deep enough to rotate, a manager demanding more, and a campaign measured only against the biggest prizes on the continent and at home.
