Arturo Vidal Reacts to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal Camp Exit

Portugal’s camp was shaken by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure before the UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark, with the episode drawing a pointed intervention from Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal.

Ronaldo left the national-team base after Jorge Jesus informed him that he would not start the Denmark match. The decision, and the forward’s subsequent exit, quickly became a subject of debate beyond Portugal.

Quick facts

  • Cristiano Ronaldo departed Portugal’s squad before the UEFA Nations League game against Denmark.
  • Jorge Jesus had told the forward he would begin the match on the bench.
  • Arturo Vidal criticised the handling of the situation during a live broadcast.
  • The Chilean said Ronaldo’s record with Portugal merited greater respect.

Speaking publicly, Vidal argued that a player of Ronaldo’s stature should not have left an international gathering in those circumstances. He described the affair as “a real disgrace” and said the coach had emerged from it poorly.

“Cristiano is among the four greatest players in football history,” Vidal said. “A player like that cannot be allowed to leave the national team in this way.”

The Chilean, known as the King Arturo, stressed Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal’s modern rise. Ronaldo has been central to the country’s major international honours, including the European Championship and the UEFA Nations League.

Vidal said established figures should be protected rather than diminished after years of service. In his view, Ronaldo has earned the authority to make his own decisions through what he has built in a Portugal shirt.

“Players such as Cristiano must be cared for and respected,” Vidal added. “He gave everything to Portugal and helped take the country to the top. Unfortunately, some coaches do not respect that greatness.”
