Aston Villa turned Villa Park into the loudest kind of European statement, dismantling Fenerbahçe 6-0 in the Champions League as Unai Emery’s side produced their most complete night of the 2026-27 campaign. Johan Manzambi opened the scoring, Nico Jackson struck twice before half-time, Ross Barkley added a second-half double and Tammy Abraham completed the rout at the death.
It was a result that altered the mood of Villa’s week in Europe from the opening quarter-hour. Manzambi, celebrating his 21st birthday, put the home side ahead in the 12th minute and set the tone against a Fenerbahçe team containing Mason Greenwood, Vedat Muriqi, Ederson, Romelu Lukaku and others, but offering little resistance.
Greenwood was loudly jeered whenever he received possession in his first match in England since leaving Manchester United in 2022. At the other end, Jackson was repeatedly embraced by the Villa Park crowd after providing the decisive burst of the first half.
The Senegal forward did not take his first opportunity, but made no mistake with the next two. Villa’s aggressive pressing forced turnovers high up the pitch and Jackson punished both moments, driving low finishes across goal from outside the box in the 30th and 39th minutes. They were his second and third goals across the opening two Champions League matchdays of the season.
Fenerbahçe’s only notable threat before the interval was an effort that struck the crossbar, with Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki otherwise largely untroubled. Emery’s team went in three goals ahead, with the Turkish visitors already facing an impossible task.
Barkley takes over after the break
Villa were more willing to break forward after half-time, protecting their advantage while exploiting the space Fenerbahçe left behind. Ismail Kartal introduced Lukaku in an attempt to change the contest, but the away side could not find a route back into it.
Instead, Manzambi won a penalty and Barkley took responsibility from the spot, scoring despite Jackson remaining on the field. The experienced midfielder soon had another, making it 5-0 in the 72nd minute after Mbaye supplied him and his left-footed effort took a deflection on its way beyond the goalkeeper.
Emery used the freedom of the scoreline to make changes, bringing on Alejandro Garnacho and handing a Villa debut to Leon Goretzka, the Germany midfielder signed as a free agent during the summer. The final flourish came in the 90th minute, when Alysson’s error allowed Abraham to score Villa’s sixth.
Abraham immediately went to celebrate with Jackson on the bench, underlining the collective nature of a night in which Villa’s attacking options overwhelmed their opponents. For Emery, Jackson’s two goals offered another encouraging sign that he has found a central forward capable of leading the line in this Champions League campaign; for Villa Park, the scoreline delivered a European evening few inside the stadium will forget.
