Jason Schiavone’s long summer added another rare line Wednesday night at Constellation Field, where the Astros’ No. 6 prospect stole his 30th base in the fourth inning for Triple-A Sugar Land against Las Vegas. A catcher joins a short 30-30 ledger
Schiavone’s second stolen base of the night pushed him to the milestone, capping a season that has moved quickly through the Astros’ system. He had stolen two bags in his final Double-A Corpus Christi game on Sept. 6, then reported to Sugar Land two days later.

Breakout ride from Asheville to Sugar Land
The 2024 11th-round selection out of James Madison began the year at High-A Asheville and became the fastest climber on Houston’s prospect board. Schiavone entered the season unranked, rose to No. 3 in the organization before the 2026 draft class was added, and now sits sixth in the Astros’ Top 30. The club named him its Minor League Player of the Year on Tuesday.
His Asheville stint gave the season its early charge. In 35 games with the Tourists, Schiavone batted .289/.452/.766 with 17 homers, 10 doubles, 42 RBIs and nine steals.
Double-A offered a more demanding test. Against sharper Texas League pitching and a narrower strike zone, his offensive production cooled for much of the stop. But he found better footing late in August, earning Prospect Team of the Week recognition in the final week of that month.

Winter work awaits in the Dominican
Schiavone will continue into the Dominican Winter League after completing his third professional season, his second full campaign. Astros assistant general manager Gavin Dickey said on the club’s pregame radio broadcast Sept. 6 that Schiavone will play for Leones del Escogido.
Astros director of player development Sam Niedorf said additional at-bats against high-level arms should help the catcher’s growth, calling a place with Escogido an honor Schiavone has earned.
Niedorf also expressed confidence in the workload Schiavone handled over the season, while noting the club will manage him carefully during the winter. He said Schiavone maintains strong routines and takes exceptional care of his body, making the organization comfortable with extra plate appearances and innings behind the dish in the Dominican.
The Astros see the winter assignment as a chance for Schiavone to face older pitchers, including arms with Major League experience, while refining the parts of his game that could put him in position to help Houston in 2027.
