Athekame Starts as Switzerland Maintain Perfect Nations League Run

Switzerland were made to look behind them almost from the opening whistle, but the response was sharp and decisive. With Lyon’s Zachary Athekame starting, Murat Yakin’s side recovered from an early scare against Slovenia to extend their perfect Nations League record.

Key takeaways

  • Switzerland beat Slovenia 2-1 for their third win from three Nations League matches.
  • Zan Vipotnik put Slovenia ahead in the second minute before an Erik Janza own goal restored parity.
  • Dan Ndoye scored the Swiss winner before half-time.
  • Switzerland lead League B Group 1 by five points over Slovenia and are level on points with Scotland.
  • Scotland claimed their first victory under former Monaco coach Sébastien Pocognoli, winning 2-0 in North Macedonia.

Switzerland recover after Vipotnik strike

Slovenia struck first when Vipotnik finished a fine move only two minutes into the match, briefly putting the visitors in control.

Switzerland did not take long to turn the momentum. Janza diverted the ball into his own net in the 10th minute, with Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak also making a costly error during the sequence.

Ndoye then completed the turnaround in the 38th minute, beating Oblak to give Switzerland a 2-1 lead at the interval. There were no further goals, allowing Yakin’s team to preserve a third successive win.

The result strengthens Switzerland’s position at the summit of League B Group 1. They now hold a five-point advantage over Slovenia, while Scotland have moved level with them on points after their own away success.

Pocognoli earns first Scotland win in Skopje

Scotland had started the competition poorly, but Pocognoli secured his first victory since taking charge with a controlled 2-0 result in Skopje.

Kieron Bowie opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a well-struck effort. Scotland remained in front until the second half, when referee François Letexier was sent to the screen by VAR after Bojan Miovski handled the ball on his own goal line.

John McGinn converted the resulting penalty in the 69th minute to settle the contest. North Macedonia remain bottom of the group without a point.
