At the Riyadh Metropolitano, Atlético de Madrid seized the first capital derby of the season with a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid, turning a tight evening into a decisive statement after the interval. Diego Simeone’s side moved into second place in LaLiga, behind Barcelona, while José Mourinho’s visitors endured another setback after their defeat to Real Betis.
A tense first meeting in Madrid
The stadium was full for the first derby of the campaign, with Atlético arriving unbeaten in two matches and yet to concede. Real, still finding their footing under Mourinho, had one win and one defeat behind them and needed points to arrest an early slide.
The first half offered little room for either side. Midfield challenges repeatedly broke up the play, with fouls slowing the rhythm. Real Madrid produced a few moves that were stopped around Atlético’s penalty area, while the home side managed only a handful of attempts before the break.

Seven minutes into the second half, Juliano Simeone ran onto a through ball and was brought down by Dean Huijsen. With the Real Madrid defender judged to be the last man, he was sent off and Atlético were awarded a penalty.

Alejandro Grimaldo converted the spot-kick, beating Thibaut Courtois to give Atlético the lead.

Mourinho responded by taking Vinícius Júnior off as he reshaped a depleted defence, but Atlético quickly made their numerical advantage count.

In the 59th minute, Juliano Simeone advanced down the right, got past Cucurella and delivered a cross for Jonathan David, who finished from close range for 2-0.

Real finally found a route back into the contest in the 88th minute, when Antonio Rüdiger scored from a free-kick. The late goal created anxious final moments for Atlético, but it did not produce an equaliser.
Second place for Simeone’s side
Atlético’s defensive organisation and their extra player kept Real Madrid from building sustained danger for most of the second half. Simeone therefore won his first home meeting with Mourinho, while Real surrendered second spot in the table to their city rivals.
For Madrid’s white half, the promising opening to Mourinho’s new spell has given way to a more difficult run. Across town, Atlético left the Metropolitano with the derby, a place directly beneath Barcelona, and early momentum in the race near the summit.
