Atlético Unión Güímar Cup Tie Called Off After Violence at Stadium

Atlético Unión Güímar’s Copa del Rey first-round tie against Sporting de Hortaleza was called off after violence outside and inside the José Ramos De Tasagaya municipal stadium left the visiting side unwilling to take the field.

Sporting de Hortaleza, the Madrid club, arrived to reports of stones being thrown near the ground. Further confrontations then took place on the pitch shortly before the scheduled kick-off, escalating concern over safety at the venue.

The visitors subsequently remained in their dressing room, refusing to begin the match without what they believed was an adequate police operation. Sporting argued that the security deployment did not match the circumstances surrounding the fixture.

After the suspension, Sporting de Hortaleza left the stadium under security escort and travelled towards the airport to depart the island.

Federation decision pending

The Spanish Football Federation must now determine the outcome of the abandoned first-round match. Three possible resolutions are under consideration: replaying the tie at a neutral venue, staging it behind closed doors, or awarding the result to Sporting de Hortaleza.
