In Alkmaar, an ordinary Sunday fixture between AZ and Telstar paused for a deeply personal moment. The AFAS Stadion came together in the 13th minute to remember Bartina Koeman, who died on Wednesday following a long illness.

Supporters of both AZ and visiting Telstar joined in a minute of applause for Bartina Koeman, the wife of former Netherlands international and coach Ronald Koeman and the mother of Telstar goalkeeper Ronald Koeman Jr.
Koeman Jr was visibly moved as the entire stadium applauded in unison for his mother. Despite the family’s loss, he had travelled with Telstar for the away match in Alkmaar.
Ronald Koeman announced Bartina’s death with a message expressing both grief and gratitude. He wrote that the family said goodbye “with immense sadness, but also with great pride and love” to his “wonderful wife” and their cherished mother and grandmother.
Telstar’s coach explained before the game that Koeman Jr had turned to football during an exceptionally difficult week and was determined to play regardless of the circumstances.
The tribute gave the match a wider meaning beyond the result, as rival sets of supporters shared an affectionate remembrance for a member of one of Dutch football’s best-known families.
