In Barcelona, the Camp Nou rebuild has entered another delicate stretch: water leaked into the press tribune during the stadium’s return to matchday use, a reminder that the vast redevelopment remains unfinished even as supporters have come back through its gates.
The news from the club
Barcelona are continuing to stage matches at the Camp Nou while work proceeds around the stadium. The venue currently operates with room for 60,000 spectators, having welcomed football again in November 2025 after a closure of more than two years.
The redevelopment began in 2023 and is ultimately intended to lift the Camp Nou’s capacity to 105,000. For now, the club expect to use the stadium through the end of the current campaign, including the La Liga meeting with Villarreal in the 28th round.
At the same club meeting, Barcelona authorised two new loans worth a combined €510 million. Of that total, €300 million has been allocated to completing the Camp Nou works, while €210 million is for the wider Espai Barça development.
The new borrowing takes Barcelona’s overall debt to €2.68 billion. Around €1.8 billion of that figure is connected to the Camp Nou intervention.
The road back to full capacity
Roof construction is scheduled to move forward from May 2027, once the final match of that season has been played. Ferran Olivé said Barcelona’s plan is to finish the current season at Camp Nou before moving back to the Estadi Olímpic for the following campaign.
The anticipated return to Camp Nou is January 2028, during the second half of the 2027-28 season. At that stage, the stadium is expected to hold 95,000 people, still short of the eventual 105,000-seat configuration as the final elements of the project continue.
