Baticle Proud as France U21s Seal Euro Qualification Against Luxembourg

France’s Under-21 side had already done the hard part in Orléans on Saturday, building a two-goal lead against Luxembourg and securing their place at the next European Championship. Yet the 3-2 win also left Gérald Baticle with a reminder for a young group still learning how quickly a match can turn.

The France coach was pleased to see qualification confirmed, and proud of a squad that has remained unbeaten during the past two years. With one qualifying fixture still to play, the team have validated both their results and the work behind them.

But the evening was far from straightforward. France made a poor start during the opening 10 minutes before recovering to go 2-0 ahead. Baticle felt his players may have begun to believe the contest was over, only for the balance to shift after a red card and Luxembourg’s immediate goal.

That sequence gave the visitors fresh belief. Luxembourg levelled at 2-2, while France briefly lost their control of possession and looked affected by doubt as their opponents pushed forward with energy.

A lesson in managing a lead

Baticle said his players nevertheless handled the most dangerous moment well after the equaliser. France stopped conceding opportunities, survived the difficult spell and gradually regained command of the ball before attacking the spaces left by Luxembourg.

The decisive breakthrough came following a counter-attack, before France showed determination from the ensuing corner. Set pieces have been a major focus for the staff for some time, and the winning moment offered a practical reward for that work.

For Baticle, the result delivered both objectives: victory and qualification. More importantly, he saw a useful lesson for players with considerable potential. A 2-0 advantage, he stressed, never guarantees anything; one incident can alter the momentum, and the experience in Orléans should serve them well as their careers develop.
