In Leverkusen, Bayer found a composed answer to one of the Bundesliga’s more combustible fixtures, beating RB Leipzig 2-0 to collect their second win of the season and underline their intention to stay in the race behind early pace-setters Borussia Dortmund.

Leverkusen know the Bundesliga’s leading positions are already demanding territory, with Dortmund setting the standard and Bayern Munich also among the sides they want to challenge. Against Leipzig, however, there was little of the usual open chaos associated with meetings between the two clubs. The contest was measured for long periods, shaped more by caution than by the high-scoring exchanges of previous years.
Miguel Gutiérrez changed that balance just before the interval. The former Girona defender, brought in to cover for Alejandro Grimaldo, delivered an accurate cross in the 44th minute. Patrick Schick met it with a volley to send Bayer into the break ahead.
Gutiérrez then completed an influential evening after the restart. Ibrahim Maza, back in action following injury, carried a counterattack forward before the Spanish full-back finished the move in the 57th minute.
The 2-0 result gave Leverkusen a second league victory of the campaign, with Gutiérrez’s contribution offering an important reminder of the depth available while Grimaldo is absent.
