Munich and Barcelona are rarely far apart when the European market begins to look ahead, and Dani Olmo has again become a name connecting the two cities. Bayern Munich are monitoring the 28-year-old Barcelona attacking midfielder as they prepare for the possibility that either Michael Olise or Jamal Musiala could leave during the next winter transfer window.
Olmo is viewed in Bavaria as a potential answer should Bayern’s attacking group change. Their interest is not new. The Spanish international first attracted attention during his time at Dinamo Zagreb, then strengthened his standing through his years with RB Leipzig, where he repeatedly impressed against Bayern.
One performance remains particularly vivid: Olmo struck three times in the 2023 German Super Cup final against the Munich side. Bayern also considered a move for him in the summer of 2024, but the player instead chose Barcelona, returning to the club and city where he had hoped to resume his career.
Barcelona see Olmo as part of the plan
Any deal would nevertheless be difficult to imagine from Barcelona’s perspective. Olmo is under contract until 2030 and has a €500 million release clause. A transfer valuation in the region of €70 million has been suggested, around €10 million more than Barcelona paid two summers ago, though that figure appears modest in an increasingly expensive market.
Barcelona do not currently envisage allowing him to go. The club regard him as an important member of the squad, and his competition with Fermín López has been seen as beneficial rather than disruptive. Olmo’s ability to operate behind the forward line, or to fill in as a false nine, gives Barcelona several attacking options.
The Terrassa-born player will now join Spain for Nations League fixtures, carrying further international responsibilities after playing an important role in the country’s World Cup success. Bayern’s interest may be longstanding, but for now Olmo remains woven into Barcelona’s plans while Munich wait to see whether their own winter brings a departure.
