Benoît Trémoulinas Eyes Bordeaux Return After Seven-Year Absence

A familiar left-sided figure could yet return to Bordeaux’s training ground. Benoît Trémoulinas, away from official competition since 2017, is considering a final playing comeback with the club where his career began.

Trémoulinas to test his knee with Bordeaux squad

  1. After five weeks of individual physical preparation, the 40-year-old former France international believes his knee has reacted positively.
  2. He announced on Tuesday that he is weighing up a return to football, while appearing on the television programme where he works as a pundit.
  3. In around two weeks, he intends to join Bordeaux’s first-team training sessions for an initial test.
  4. He will then allow himself several more weeks to judge whether he can cope with the pace of group work and complete repeated sessions without knee trouble.
  5. If those tests are successful, Trémoulinas is prepared to play competitively again for the Girondins.

A long road back

Born in Lormont, on the edge of Bordeaux, Trémoulinas came through the Girondins academy and made 220 appearances for the club. He also won five caps for France during a career that took him to Sevilla.

His last official match came in 2017, when his Sevilla contract ended. A series of knee operations then kept him out of the game, before he formally retired in 2019. He will turn 41 in December.

Recent social-media posts showing him back in training had already stirred optimism among Bordeaux supporters. His planned return to collective work will now provide the decisive indication over whether that hope can become a real comeback.

Bordeaux’s Regional 1 campaign begins

The Girondins are playing in Régional 1 this season after a summer of uncertainty, with the club aiming to climb back into National 2.

Their competitive season is scheduled to begin on Friday 16 October at 19:00 against Bayonne’s reserve side. Bordeaux’s first four league fixtures were postponed and will be played at later dates.
