Bobby McMann Lifts Kraken Past Flyers in Shootout Thriller

Seattle let a two-goal cushion disappear in the third period, then leaned on Philipp Grubauer and Bobby McMann to escape Philadelphia with a 3-2 shootout win Tuesday at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

McMann supplied the deciding goal in the fifth round of the tiebreaker for the Kraken, who moved to 5-2-0. Grubauer turned aside 24 shots before overtime ended and denied four of Philadelphia’s five shootout tries.

Kraken build the lead

  1. McMann opened the scoring on the power play at 7:57 of the first period. Jordan Eberle drove in from the left goal line, where Flyers defenseman Simon Benoit knocked the puck away. It slid to McMann in the right slot, and he fired it past Dan Vladar on the short side.

  2. Eberle had a chance to extend Seattle’s edge on a penalty shot at 6:23 of the second. The Kraken captain got around Vladar’s poke-check try after cutting through the crease, but Vladar recovered and sealed the play with his right pad.

  3. Ville Ottavainen made it 2-0 at 8:54 of the middle frame, scoring his first NHL goal. Playing his fourth game of the season, the rookie defenseman snapped a shot from high between the circles through a Matty Beniers screen.

Philadelphia answers in the third

  1. Christian Dvorak pulled the Flyers within one at 6:07 of the third. Oliver Bonk carried the puck the full length of the rink before sending a backhand pass across the ice to Dvorak, who finished from the right side.

  2. Trevor Zegras leveled the game 1:13 later during 4-on-4 play. Travis Sanheim entered the Seattle zone, held up near the post and found Zegras arriving through the slot for a one-timer at 7:20.

  3. The clubs remained even through overtime, sending the game to the shootout with Philadelphia still chasing its first win of the season.

  4. McMann beat Vladar in round five to settle it. Vladar made 29 saves through overtime and stopped three of Seattle’s five shootout attempts, but Grubauer’s four saves in the skills finish gave the Kraken the extra point.
