Under the Arctic Circle, Bodø/Glimt added Borussia Dortmund to a growing European collection, beating Niko Kovac’s German side 1-0 in the second matchday of the Champions League league phase.
The Norwegian champions had already shown last season that their rise was not a passing northern curiosity, reaching the Champions League round of 16 after a string of striking results. Dortmund arrived with fresh momentum behind Kovac, recently handed a new contract, and with the club second in the Bundesliga, level on points with leaders Freiburg. Yet they spent much of the evening chasing a match controlled by the hosts.
Bodø/Glimt take command
Bodø/Glimt were the only side consistently looking to force the issue before half-time. Their pressing, energy and willingness to attack prevented Dortmund from establishing any meaningful attacking rhythm.
The home side did not turn their first-half superiority into a goal, wasting each of the openings they created, but Dortmund were thoroughly outplayed during the opening period and offered little going forward.
The breakthrough came seven minutes after the restart. Fredrik Sjøvold began the move, then arrived to finish it after Sondre Auklend supplied the decisive ball, putting Bodø/Glimt ahead in the 52nd minute.
Dortmund response falls short
Only after conceding did Dortmund raise their level. Kovac altered his side, with Felix Nmecha coming on for Veerman, and the substitute helped change the direction of the contest.
Nmecha gave Dortmund greater drive and their attacks began to push Bodø/Glimt back. The visitors created pressure and posed more danger than they had before the interval, but could not find an equaliser or overturn Sjøvold’s goal.
The result continues Bodø/Glimt’s remarkable Champions League story. Last season they beat Manchester City 3-1 and Atlético 2-1, before eliminating Inter in the round-of-16 access tie with 3-1 and 2-1 victories. Dortmund are now the latest major visitor to leave northern Norway defeated.
