Bologna Sign Matteo Darmian Until 2027 After Holm Injury

Bologna have turned to experience after Emil Holm’s serious injury, completing the signing of Matteo Darmian on a contract running until 30 June 2027. Raffaele Palladino’s side moved for the free agent market after Holm suffered a right hamstring tendon problem while on Sweden duty, an injury that required surgery and is expected to keep him out for between four and six months.

Darmian had been without a club since his Inter contract expired in June 2026, but remains in Serie A with Bologna offering him another role in a long top-level career. Born in 1989, the defender arrives as a player able to cover several positions along the flank and, when needed, operate in a deeper defensive role.

His value to Bologna lies in the reliability accumulated across Italian and European football: positional discipline, game awareness and a balance between defensive work and forward contribution. He joins a squad facing the practical consequences of Holm’s absence, with the club adding a seasoned option rather than allowing a lengthy injury lay-off to narrow Palladino’s choices.

Darmian came through Milan’s academy and made his Serie A debut in the 2006-07 season. Loan and permanent spells at Padova and Palermo preceded four influential years at Torino, where he developed into one of the division’s most highly regarded full-backs.

In 2015 he moved to Manchester United, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. He returned to Italy with Parma in 2019 before joining Inter in October 2020, where he became an important defensive utility player and featured in two Champions League finals.

At international level, Darmian made his Italy debut in 2014 and was part of the Azzurri squad at that year’s World Cup in Brazil. He has collected more than 40 caps. His club honours include a Scudetto, two Coppa Italia titles, an Italian Supercoppa, as well as the domestic cup and European trophies won in England. Bologna will now look to that breadth of experience as they continue their season without Holm for much of the coming campaign.
