Brentford Thrash Chelsea 3-0 as Xabi Alonso’s Side Stumble

London’s westward derby turned sharply against Chelsea as Brentford swept to a 3-0 home win, ending an afternoon in which Xabi Alonso’s reshaped side could neither protect its early promise nor find a route back into the contest. Chelsea have now gone three Premier League matches without victory and head into the three-week international break in seventh place.

Brentford rise as Chelsea’s problems deepen

The defeat leaves Chelsea with only one point from their recent league run, while Brentford move up to third on nine points and remain unbeaten after five matches. The scoreline also underlined a troubling defensive pattern for Alonso: Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in five league fixtures, with at least two allowed in every game.

  • Brentford won 3-0 at home in the London derby.
  • Chelsea dropped to seventh after a third successive league match without a win.
  • The Bees reached third place with nine points and have not lost in five outings.
  • Chelsea have shipped 12 goals so far, conceding a minimum of two in each Premier League match.

With Reece James, Moisés Caicedo and João Pedro unavailable, Alonso leaned on experience and handed Premier League starts to Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck, Pep Chavarría and Valentín Barco. It was Henderson’s first appearance since suffering a fractured forearm at the World Cup, and came against his former club Brentford.

A restrained first half at the Gtech

Chelsea initially looked more secure than they have for much of the season, though the match soon settled into a slow and cautious rhythm. Pedro Neto produced the clearest early moment in the 10th minute, forcing Caoimhín Kelleher into a fine save from a placed effort.

Brentford, short of their usual energy for long spells, tested Emiliano Martínez without seriously extending the goalkeeper. Chelsea then came close before the interval when Chavarría advanced from the left and pulled the ball back for Morgan Rogers. The midfielder struck firmly, but Austrian teenage centre-back Jannik Schuster blocked the shot with his body.

Set piece opens the door

The game gained urgency after the restart, and Brentford found the decisive opening around the hour mark. Mikkel Damsgaard’s corner reached the far post, where Schuster headed it back across goal. Jadon Anthony met it with another header and scored from close range, with Martínez remaining on his line.

Chelsea needed their attacking players to respond, but Neto, Cole Palmer and Rogers were unable to establish a connection with Welbeck before the striker was substituted. Brentford closed the central spaces effectively, and Chelsea did not register an effort on target during the second half. Chavarría’s attempt flew over.

Bees finish the derby in ruthless fashion

Brentford waited for counter-attacking opportunities and took one in the 81st minute. Kevin Schade broke clear and saw Martínez block his initial shot, but Igor Thiago converted the loose ball into an unguarded net.

The home side added a third in stoppage time. Schade delivered from the right towards the far post, where Fábio Carvalho was unmarked to turn the cross home.

  • Jadon Anthony gave Brentford the lead from Damsgaard’s corner.
  • Igor Thiago scored after Martínez had denied Schade’s first effort.
  • Fábio Carvalho completed the result from Schade’s late cross.

For Brentford, the result sustains an unbeaten opening to the campaign and lifts the club into the leading group. Chelsea, meanwhile, enter the international pause with their defensive record worsening and their usual attacking force absent on a damaging afternoon across London.
