For 70 minutes, Brommapojkarna appeared to have turned an away derby into a procession. By the final whistle on Saturday, they had survived one of Swedish football’s wildest turnarounds to beat AIK Stockholm 6-5.
Quick facts
- AIK Stockholm lost 6-5 at home to Brommapojkarna in the 23rd round of the Swedish league.
- The teams went into the interval level at 0-0.
- Brommapojkarna built a 5-1 advantage by the 70th minute.
- AIK drew level through Johan Hove in the eighth minute of added time.
- Right-back Mads Hansen restored Brommapojkarna’s lead in the 99th minute.
The scoreless first half gave no warning of what was to follow. Brommapojkarna struck first three minutes after the restart, only for AIK to answer in the 55th minute.
The visitors then produced a devastating spell. Goals in the 59th, 61st, 66th and 70th minutes carried them into a 5-1 lead, with the home side seemingly finished.
AIK refused to disappear. Ayari reduced the deficit three minutes after Brommapojkarna’s fifth, before further goals in the 81st and 83rd minutes transformed the closing stages.
Hove then made it 5-5 in the eighth minute of stoppage time, triggering celebrations among the AIK supporters who believed their side had rescued an extraordinary point.
There was still another twist. Added time had already passed its indicated eight minutes when Hansen arrived at close range and guided home to make it 6-5, silencing the home crowd.
Brommapojkarna defender Simon Strand admitted the match had taken everything from his side. “Those who came got value for their money,” he said. “It was enjoyable until 5-1, but after that we had to fight our way through it. I am completely exhausted after a game like that.”
The result left Brommapojkarna, who began the weekend 11th, with a night they will not quickly forget. AIK, ninth before kick-off, were left to absorb the damage from a comeback that almost became complete.
