Bruno Fernandes Backs Cristiano Ronaldo and Calls for Portugal Unity

In Copenhagen, on the eve of Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Norway, Bruno Fernandes moved to protect Cristiano Ronaldo’s standing after the forward left the national-team camp amid recent uncertainty.

Fernandes puts Ronaldo’s place beyond dispute

The Manchester United midfielder said he had spoken directly with Ronaldo and urged both Portugal’s players and supporters to remember the scale of the captain’s contribution, regardless of developments around the squad.

  • Fernandes described Ronaldo as Portugal’s foremost national-team icon.
  • He said the forward’s influence reaches beyond football and the national side, calling him the country’s greatest symbol because of his achievements worldwide.
  • He argued that Ronaldo’s status among the game’s all-time greats, as well as his place in Portuguese supporters’ affections, is secure.

“What I told him is what I will say here: whatever happens, Cristiano will always remain the biggest symbol of our national team and of Portuguese football,” Fernandes said.

He added that Ronaldo’s body of work over more than two decades with Portugal had made him a figure of national importance, not merely a leading player of his generation.

A departure from the Copenhagen camp

The discussion has followed Ronaldo’s decision to leave Portugal’s training base in Copenhagen after talks with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and head coach Jorge Jesus.

The episode came after Ronaldo was omitted from the starting XI for Portugal’s recent match against Norway. Reports had pointed to tension in the relationship between the forward and the coach.

Explanation expected later

Ronaldo has indicated that he will address the reasons for his departure at a later date. For now, Fernandes’ intervention has centred on preserving perspective around a player he believes has already secured an unmatched place in Portugal’s football history.
