In Portugal’s camp, the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has brought an immediate change in both leadership and symbolism ahead of the UEFA Nations League meeting with Denmark. Bruno Fernandes will wear the captain’s armband for the Lusitanians, stepping into the role long held by the national team’s most recognisable figure.
The Manchester United midfielder has become one of Portugal’s established voices over recent years, combining senior international experience with a prominent role on the pitch. His appointment gives the side a familiar leader for a match that arrives during an abrupt adjustment to the squad.
Ronaldo left the training camp unexpectedly, prompting the Portuguese staff to reorganise elements of the selected group. As well as naming Fernandes captain, the team had to address the vacant shirt number left by the forward’s exit.
Rafael Leão will take Portugal’s number seven against Denmark after UEFA confirmed the reassignment. Tournament regulations do not allow an unused number to remain within the official squad list, meaning the Portuguese Football Federation was required to allocate Ronaldo’s former number to another available player.
Fernandes is no stranger to the responsibility, having regularly captained Manchester United, but the occasion offers a different weight in national colours. Against Denmark, he will lead Portugal while Leão carries the shirt number most closely associated with the absent captain.
