Bundesliga Club Mottos: Bayern’s “Mia san mia” and More

Bundesliga club mottos range from regional identity to industrial history, supporter culture and established nicknames. Bayern’s “Mia san mia” is the most deeply rooted, while several clubs prefer a short phrase that connects the team to its city or fan base.

Key takeaways

  • Bayern’s “Mia san mia” became a core part of the club’s identity during the 1980s.
  • Borussia Dortmund adopted “Echte Liebe” after its centenary campaign in 2009.
  • VfB Stuttgart replaced “Furchtlos und treu” last year because of the phrase’s Nazi-era use.
  • Mainz 05 has used “Der Mainzer Weg” since 2021, following work by club bodies and fan representatives.
  • Union Berlin’s “Eisern Union” reflects loyalty and a working-class industrial heritage.
  • Schalke 04 deliberately operates without a defined club motto.

Tradition, cities and supporter identity

FC Bayern’s “Mia san mia” translates broadly as “we are who we are”. Its roots are said to reach back to an early medieval monastic maxim, “Ego sum qui sum” — “I am who I am” — associated with monks in the Alpine foothills. In the 19th century, a similar line was reportedly used by Austria-Hungary’s Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment No. 4: “Mir san mir – von Nummer vier!” The expression spread into Bavaria amid patriotic currents around 1900 before becoming closely identified with Bayern decades later. It now represents confidence and the club’s drive for success.

Dortmund’s “Echte Liebe”, or “True Love”, began as part of the “100 Jahre echte Liebe” anniversary campaign in 2009. It became the club’s official slogan and is intended to capture the lasting bond, loyalty and passion of BVB supporters.

Eintracht Frankfurt uses “Wo das Herz der Menschen schlägt” — “Where people’s hearts beat” — to underline the connection between the club, its city and its followers. “Im Herzen von Europa”, taken from the club anthem, is also used as an Eintracht identifier.

Hamburger SV’s official “Nur der HSV” centres on fan attachment to the club. Werder Bremen’s “Lebenslang grün-weiß” points to the club colours and to long-term supporter loyalty; it is a central marketing phrase and also appears on merchandise.

FC Augsburg frames its regional bond through “Eine Region – ein Verein – eine Leidenschaft” — one region, one club, one passion. SC Freiburg does not have an official brand motto but uses “SC Freiburg – mehr als Fußball” to express responsibility towards people across the region.

1. FC Köln’s brand claim, “Spürbar anders.”, presents the club as distinctive and highlights the commitment of its supporters. SC Paderborn uses “Mit Herzblut. Fußball.” to represent passion, internal unity and a sense of belonging extending beyond the game itself.

Nicknames, renewal and club roots

RB Leipzig has no single philosophical motto. Its public identity is instead shaped by the nickname “Die Roten Bullen”, a direct reference to majority shareholder Red Bull. Bayer Leverkusen similarly relies on “Werkself”, the factory team, reflecting the club’s historical connection to the Bayer company.

Hoffenheim’s “Zamma simma Hoffe” means “Together we are Hoffenheim” and places supporters, club and region at the centre. The club also frequently uses “Vom Bolzplatz in die Arena. Vom Dorf in die Welt” — from the kickabout pitch to the arena, from the village to the world — to promote its village-club image.

Stuttgart now represents itself with “Zusammen voran”, or “Forward together”. The phrase was introduced alongside the “VfB 1893” wordmark in a marketing campaign and is meant to convey unity and ambition. It replaced “Furchtlos und treu”, a former motto also used by the Nazis.

Gladbach combines identity and nickname in “Wir sind Borussia. Wir sind: Die Fohlen”. “Die Fohlen”, the Foals, dates to the 1970s, when Borussia’s quick, lively style led to comparisons with young horses.

Union Berlin’s “Eisern Union” is both a familiar terrace call and the club motto. “Eisern” means iron, standing for solidarity and commitment. The term is likely connected to the industrial working background of predecessor club SC Union Oberschöneweide.

Mainz 05’s guiding idea, “Der Mainzer Weg”, was introduced in 2021. Fan liaison staff, the board and supervisory board developed it to reflect Mainz identity, the city and its culture.

SV Elversberg uses “Zusammen beim Spiel – gemeinsam zum Ziel” — together at the match, together towards the goal. The wording emphasises a shared experience and the club’s family-oriented environment.

Across the league landscape, the slogans serve different purposes. Some preserve history, others market a regional connection, and others simply formalise a nickname already used by supporters. Schalke is the exception: the Gelsenkirchen club has chosen not to adopt a specific motto.
