Caen End Rouen’s Unbeaten Start in Thrilling Normandy Derby

Michel-d’Ornano found its voice again on Thursday night as Caen handed Rouen their first defeat of the Ligue 3 season, winning a fierce Normandy derby 3-2.

The result cuts the gap between the neighbours to two points after eight rounds. Rouen remain top, but Stade Malherbe have put their revival firmly into view after a flat campaign last term.

Quick facts

  • Caen beat league leaders Rouen 3-2 in the Normandy derby.
  • Rouen suffered their first league loss of the season.
  • Dennis Appiah opened the scoring in the eighth minute.
  • Armand Gnanduillet struck twice before half-time.
  • Rouen coach Régis Brouard was sent off in stoppage time.

Caen, relegated to the third tier in 2024, finished eighth in National last season and never entered the promotion fight. This was a different kind of evening: tense, loud and shaped by a first half that ran beyond its limits.

Appiah, formerly of Nantes and Saint-Étienne, gave the hosts an early advantage when he scored from a corner after eight minutes.

Rouen appeared to have found an equaliser through Malik Tchokounté in the 38th minute, only for the goal to be ruled out by the FVS review. The striker did not wait long for another opening, finishing across goal in the 45th minute after Salim Diaby’s work down the flank.

The contest then swung back Caen’s way before the interval had properly ended. Gnanduillet restored the home side’s lead with a controlled finish in the fourth minute of added time, then broke through again three minutes later to complete his double.

Joël Viana pulled one back for Rouen in the first minute of stoppage time, but there was no final rescue. Brouard’s frustration spilled over shortly afterwards, with the Rouen manager dismissed in the 92nd minute after protesting against the officiating.

Caen saw out the derby and celebrated with a lap of honour. For a club trying to rebuild its authority in Ligue 3, the night brought both three points and a clear signal to the side still setting the pace.
