Elland Road offered Manchester United another glimpse of relief before the familiar frustration returned. Michael Carrick’s side led through Bryan Mbeumo but could not hold off Daniel Farke’s Leeds United, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin earning the home team a 1-1 draw that reflected an even contest in West Yorkshire.
Leeds answer United’s early advantage
- Leeds began with greater urgency, forcing United goalkeeper Senne Lammens into an important save from Noah Okafor.
- United then saw Mbeumo send an earlier opening wide, but the Cameroon international made no mistake with his next major chance in the 35th minute.
- Youri Tielemans released the former Brentford forward with a precise pass, and Mbeumo finished left-footed to put the visitors ahead.
- Lisandro Martínez, troubled by a physical issue, did not return after half-time. Noussair Mazraoui came on in the 46th minute.
- Leeds restarted on the front foot and drew level after a corner. Tarik Muharemovic headed the ball into Calvert-Lewin’s path, allowing the England striker to finish with his right foot.
- United could not produce a meaningful response, while Mazraoui made a late intervention to prevent Leeds from finding a winning second goal.
A difficult opening for Carrick
The point does little to ease the pressure around United’s start to the Premier League season. They have won only once in seven league matches, their sole victory coming in a 5-2 result against Ipswich Town on 30 August.
Marcus Rashford, who enjoyed a strong campaign on loan at Barcelona last season, remained among the substitutes throughout and was not used by Carrick.
Leeds leave the match in seventh place, while United sit 13th after a run that has brought just one league win from their opening seven fixtures.
