Eintracht Frankfurt left the MEWA ARENA with a 3-1 Bundesliga win over Mainz 05 on Saturday, scoring twice through Can Uzun and once through Jonathan Burkardt in Matchday 3. Mainz had a route back before half-time, but Nadiem Amiri’s penalty was saved and Frankfurt took control before the interval.
Eintracht Frankfurt beat Mainz 05 as Uzun scores twice
Frankfurt struck early. In the ninth minute, Burkardt led a counterattack and set up Uzun, whose low right-foot finish found the left corner. Ritsu Doan had already hit the left post from outside the area after a Keita Kosugi header from a free-kick.
Mainz created pressure around the Frankfurt box. Sheraldo Becker had efforts blocked, Phillip Tietz was denied from close range, and a number of crosses caused problems. Their biggest moment arrived in the 41st minute, when Raphael Onyedika fouled Becker in the area and was booked. Amiri’s spot-kick was pushed away low to the goalkeeper’s left.
Frankfurt made the miss count in first-half stoppage time. Jeremiaha Maluze headed the ball into Burkardt’s path and the former Mainz forward placed a low finish inside the left post for 2-0.
Mainz introduced Ransford Königsdörffer for Lee Jae-Sung at the break, then brought on Danny da Costa for Anthony Caci after 62 minutes. Königsdörffer headed wide soon after his arrival, while Tietz and Amiri also tested the Frankfurt defence. At the other end, Kosugi was denied from close range and Doan sent another effort narrowly wide.
Mario Götze entered for Noël Aséko in the 59th minute and supplied Frankfurt’s third goal a minute later. His pass found Uzun in front of goal, and the forward converted from close range for his second of the afternoon.
Mainz continued to attack. Benedict Hollerbach and Rael Nakuzola came on for Becker and Phillipp Mwene in the 74th minute, while Otto Ruoppi replaced Amiri after 85 minutes. Hollerbach saw a long-range effort blocked, and Tietz had a central shot stopped after a Königsdörffer cross.
Frankfurt refreshed their side with Younes Ebnoutalib for Burkardt, then Timothy Chandler and Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab for Elias Baum and Uzun in the 87th minute. Götze received a yellow card for a dangerous challenge during the second half.
Ruoppi created Mainz’s late consolation in the 89th minute, crossing for Tietz to finish with his right foot. Hollerbach then headed wide and Nakuzola forced a low save in added time, but Frankfurt saw out the final minutes for a 3-1 away victory.
