Canadian Open, Cincinnati and Rome Join Equal-Pay WTA 1000 Events

Equal prize money will be in place across every combined WTA 1000 event after the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open and Italian Open joined the group of tournaments matching women’s and men’s payouts.

The change puts those three stops alongside Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and the China Open, as well as the United Cup and all four Grand Slam tournaments. The move is another significant step in the WTA’s push for financial parity at the sport’s leading shared events.

Quick facts

  • The Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open and Italian Open will offer equal prize money for women and men.
  • Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and the China Open already provide equal purses at combined 1000-level tournaments.
  • The Italian Tennis Federation had targeted prize-money equality in Rome within three years of its 2023 announcement, but the objective was not met by 2025.
  • The 2027 WTA schedule is set to include 55 tournaments in 26 countries and territories.
  • Charlotte, North Carolina, will host the WTA Finals from 2027 for a minimum of three years.

Rome had been working toward the change since the Italian Tennis Federation set out its plan in 2023. Its stated deadline was within three years, although equal prize money had not arrived at the Foro Italico by 2025.

Valerie Camillo, the WTA Chair, described full equality at combined WTA 1000 tournaments as a landmark moment for the game. She said it underlined the organisation’s commitment to sporting and financial fairness for its players, while reflecting the original principles on which the WTA was founded.

The prize-money development comes as the WTA prepares for a wide-ranging 2027 campaign. The tour calendar will span 55 events across 26 countries and territories.

The season will conclude with a new WTA Finals home in Charlotte. The North Carolina city is scheduled to stage the elite year-end event for at least three seasons beginning in 2027.
