Casemiro Own Goal Sinks Inter Miami as Messi Returns in Red Bulls Defeat

At the New York Red Bulls, Inter Miami’s recent MLS momentum came to an end in a 2-0 away defeat, with Lionel Messi making only a second-half appearance after a brief return to Spain.

The news from the club

Miami had gone three league matches without defeat before Saturday’s loss, but fell behind inside six minutes when Casemiro turned the ball into his own net. It was the former Real Madrid midfielder’s second own goal since arriving in the United States.

Messi had been in Oviedo until Friday, where he received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports. He began the match among the substitutes and entered 10 minutes after half-time, but Inter Miami could not find a route back into the contest.

The Red Bulls protected their early advantage and sealed the result deep into second-half stoppage time, when Emil Forsberg scored to make it 2-0 for the New York side.
