CeeDee Lamb delivered a homecoming performance for the Cowboys on Sunday, catching 17 passes for 189 yards and the decisive touchdown in Dallas’ 34-30 victory over the Houston Texans. The Richmond, Texas, native had never previously played at Reliant Stadium, despite growing up about 30 miles southwest of Houston, but he made the occasion one his family will remember.
Lamb’s 12-yard touchdown catch from Dak Prescott with 40 seconds remaining put Dallas ahead for good. A large group of relatives was in the building, including Lamb’s grandmother, and the receiver said the experience carried special meaning after a long path back to the Houston area.
“It means everything,” Lamb said. “Seeing my grandma there was really special. She was not at many of my games or doing all the cheering, so having my family there meant a lot. It has been a long road to get here, and I’m grateful to come back to a place that feels familiar from growing up.”
Prescott threw Lamb’s way 21 times and said he did not realize until Brian Schottenheimer addressed the locker room that his top receiver had totaled 17 receptions. The total is second in Cowboys history for a single game, behind only Jason Witten’s 18 catches against the New York Giants in 2012.
“I’m throwing the ball, so I don’t know how I missed that,” Prescott said. “He kept getting open and doing whatever the team needed—catching screens, playing physically and running after the catch like a back. He is an incredible player, and we are fortunate to have him. I’m happy he had that kind of day back home.”
Lamb’s reception total was the NFL’s highest since Keenan Allen caught 18 passes in Week 3 of the 2023 season. He also became the first player since Brandon Marshall in Week 14 of 2009 to record at least 17 receptions and a touchdown in the same game.
The final catch was among the least difficult of the day. Facing second-and-10, Lamb lined up against Texans safety Jalen Pitre, who played with outside leverage. Lamb pushed Pitre farther outside early in the route, then cut inside into open space for Prescott’s clean throw.
Prescott said Dallas had identified the opportunity during its preparation. He credited Schottenheimer for calling the play at the right moment and said he believed the design would produce a touchdown as soon as it came in.
Lamb had five receptions on the winning possession and has now posted three consecutive 100-yard games, tying the longest such run of his career. He said staying composed remains central even when the game reaches its biggest moments.
“I enjoy the big games, but every game is big because you want to finish with a win,” Lamb said. “Winning comes with execution and confidence. Through all the chaos, you have to stay calm.”
Before Sunday, Lamb’s career high for catches in a game was 13, a mark he had reached three times. His 189 receiving yards were the third-highest single-game total of his career, behind 227 against the Detroit Lions in Week 17 of 2023 and 191 against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9 that same season.
The performance was Lamb’s 30th career game with at least 100 receiving yards. Since entering the league in 2020, only Justin Jefferson, with 37, and Davante Adams, with 32, have more. Lamb also registered his seventh career outing of 150 yards or more; only Cowboys Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, with 10, has more in franchise history.
Lamb also moved past another celebrated Cowboys No. 88, Hall of Famer Drew Pearson, to take fourth place on the club’s all-time receiving-yard list. He is 74 yards behind Tony Hill for third place, with Jason Witten’s 12,977 yards and Irvin’s 11,904 still ahead of him.
Dallas returns Thursday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, giving Lamb an immediate chance to continue his climb through the franchise record book.
“I can’t completely process it right now, but I’m thankful for the chance,” Lamb said. “There are a lot of emotions. My motivation is always to see what I can do next week to build on this. I’m grateful to be here, and I’m looking forward to breaking more records. That is no disrespect to the players ahead of me—but I’m coming.”
