Igor Chernyshov finished a two-goal night 3:18 into overtime, driving a one-timer past Anton Forsberg to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Kings at SAP Center on Saturday. Macklin Celebrini carried the puck through center and set up Chernyshov in the left circle for the winner, which beat Forsberg on the glove side.
San Jose is 2-0-0 to open the season, its first such start since 2021-22. Tyler Toffoli produced a goal and an assist, Celebrini had two helpers, and Yaroslav Askarov stopped 31 shots. Kiefer Sherwood and Nolan Allan also scored.
Los Angeles fell to 0-2-0 after an 8-4 opening-night loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday. Adrian Kempe, Artemi Panarin and Quinton Byfield each recorded a goal and an assist, while Brandt Clarke supplied two assists. Forsberg made 20 saves in his first appearance of the season.
After the horn
Kempe opened the scoring on a Kings power play at 15:50 of the first period. Panarin spotted him across the seam from the left circle, and Kempe hammered a one-timer from the right circle past Askarov’s blocker.
The Sharks answered 1:48 into the second. Stenberg worked down the left side before feeding Toffoli at the far post for a power-play tap-in. The assist was Stenberg’s first NHL point after he was selected No. 2 in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Sherwood put San Jose ahead 2-1 at 9:52 of the middle period when he intercepted a cross-ice attempt and snapped a shot from the high slot. Allan extended the margin at 12:32, taking a Michael Misa pass at the left point and sending a wrist shot through Forsberg’s five-hole.
Byfield brought Los Angeles within one just before the second-period horn. With two seconds left, Mats Zuccarello sent the puck from the right corner to Byfield, who lifted a wrist shot from the right circle over Askarov’s shoulder for another Kings power-play goal.
Chernyshov restored the two-goal edge 4:08 into the third. Toffoli launched a stretch pass from the defensive zone, sending Chernyshov over the blue line, and the forward beat Forsberg’s blocker with a backhand from the slot.
The Kings kept coming. Erik Gustafsson’s shot from the left point redirected off Erik Haula as he crossed the crease at 10:21, cutting San Jose’s lead to 4-3. Panarin then tied it with five minutes remaining after Byfield collected a Sharks turnover at the blue line and found him in the left circle for a one-timer.
That set up overtime, where Celebrini’s rush up the middle created the shooting lane Chernyshov needed to end it.
