Christian Eriksen’s time at Wolfsburg has ended with the midfielder back in Denmark, putting family first as he continues his recovery from another cardiac episode. The 34-year-old has agreed to terminate a contract that had been due to run until 30 June 2027, bringing a one-year spell in Germany to a close.
Eriksen suffered the incident on 7 June during Denmark’s match against Ukraine, despite having played with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator since his first cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 in June 2021. Three months on, Denmark’s all-time leading international scorer remains on a rehabilitation programme at home.
Wolfsburg said the decision over the player’s future had always belonged to Eriksen and accepted his request to leave by mutual consent. The club have been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga, but the former Manchester United midfielder said he believed they could return to the top flight.
“At this time, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said. “I am pleased that we were able to find a solution together. My period at Wolfsburg had its ups and downs, but I know the club is now in good hands for its return to the Bundesliga and I am convinced VfL have a bright future.”
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent and made 34 appearances across the past year. His departure leaves football well behind the more immediate concern: a recovery being managed close to those closest to him.
