Christoph Baumgartner Takes Key Step in RB Leipzig Comeback

RB Leipzig have received a positive injury update as Christoph Baumgartner returned for parts of team training on Tuesday, more than four months after his tendon injury.

The sporting fact

Baumgartner suffered the setback while warming up for Austria’s friendly against Tunisia in Vienna on 1 June, a 1-0 win. The injury required surgery and ruled the 27-year-old out of the World Cup.

The Austria international has been working towards his return since then. Tuesday brought his first involvement in selected team exercises.

There is no date yet for his full return to training or for a competitive comeback under Leipzig’s new coach Martin Demichelis.

Baumgartner was Leipzig’s leading scorer last season. He produced 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 competitive matches. He has made 58 appearances for Austria.

Rocco Reitz and Brajan Gruda also completed limited sections of Tuesday’s session.

Reitz, signed from Borussia Mönchengladbach, has been recovering from a muscle injury in his left thigh sustained in early September.

Gruda was substituted after 26 minutes of Leipzig’s 2-0 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on 20 September with an abdominal muscle strain. The problem also forced him to withdraw from Germany’s recent internationals against Serbia, won 2-0, and Greece, which ended 0-0.
