Cienciano’s Copa Sudamericana exit to City Torque has been followed by an allegation that was withdrawn within hours, leaving the Peruvian club’s defeat overshadowed by a brief controversy off the pitch.
After Cienciano lost the two-leg series against City Torque, one of the Peruvian side’s players claimed that the president of the opposing club had attempted to bribe members of his team.
The accusation was subsequently retracted by the player later the same day. No further details of the alleged approach, including the circumstances or any proposed payment, were disclosed.
Continental tie ends in controversy
City Torque progressed from the Copa Sudamericana series at Cienciano’s expense. The post-match allegation briefly brought an unexpected disciplinary dimension to a tie decided on the field, before the player reversed his statement.
With the accusation withdrawn, the immediate focus returns to City Torque’s progress in the continental competition and Cienciano’s elimination.
