Claudia Pina Hits Four as Barcelona Thrash Real Madrid 7-0

At Camp Nou, Barcelona’s latest meeting with Real Madrid became a landmark afternoon in the women’s Clásico: a 7-0 victory, their widest margin yet against their city rivals, driven by four goals from Claudia Pina.

Key takeaways

  • Barcelona have now beaten Real Madrid 25 times in 26 meetings, with the Madrid side winning only once.
  • Claudia Pina became the first player to score four times in a single edition of the women’s Clásico.
  • Ewa Pajor, Caroline Graham Hansen and Sydney Schertenleib also found the net at Camp Nou.
  • Pina has reached nine goals against Real Madrid, while Pajor joined Alexia Putellas on 14 Clásico goals.
  • The result was Barcelona’s third consecutive clean sheet against Real Madrid.

A record-breaking afternoon in Barcelona

The 7-0 scoreline set a new benchmark for Barcelona in this fixture. Leaving aside the two meetings in 2019-20, when the club later absorbed by Real Madrid was still known as CD Tacón, Barcelona had never won a women’s Clásico by more than six goals. The only larger victory in the wider sequence came in a 9-1 result against Tacón in 2019.

Pina, 25, supplied the defining individual performance with four of Barcelona’s seven goals. Her haul took her past a notable threshold in the fixture’s scoring records: she is now alone on nine goals against Real Madrid, behind only Pajor and Putellas, who are level at the top with 14 each. Pajor’s goal on Sunday brought the Polish forward alongside the former Barcelona captain.

Barcelona’s defensive control was equally emphatic. This was their third straight shutout against Real Madrid, following a 3-0 Liga F win at the Alfredo Di Stéfano and last season’s 6-0 home victory in the second leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final.

Including Sunday’s match, Barcelona have kept Real Madrid scoreless in 18 encounters, excluding the games against CD Tacón. In those clean-sheet victories, Barcelona have scored four goals on seven occasions, five on four occasions, six once and seven once.

Real Madrid have only twice limited Barcelona to a one-goal win: in the 2022 Women’s Super Cup semi-final and in the second-half Liga F meeting of the 2022-23 season.

The next stops in the Liga F calendar

Barcelona now turn towards a trip to Real Sociedad on Sunday 18 October, with the kick-off time still to be confirmed.

Real Madrid return home a day earlier, hosting Espanyol on Saturday 17 October at 12:30 Mexico City time, looking to respond after a difficult journey back from Camp Nou.
