Clayton Keller supplied two goals, including the empty-netter that sealed it, as the Utah Mammoth skated out of Rogers Place with a 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday. The result gave Edmonton its first regulation defeat of the young season and snapped a five-game winning streak.
Utah strikes on special teams and answers quickly
The Mammoth improved to 6-2-0 with their third straight victory, leaning on timely power-play work and a fast response after Edmonton briefly pulled within a goal.
- Barrett Hayton opened the scoring at 10:38 of the first period, finishing a loose puck from close range after Kailer Yamamoto’s chance created a rebound.
- Keller doubled the lead on the power play at 11:57 of the second. Logan Cooley delivered a between-the-legs feed from the slot, and Keller fired short side over Devon Levi’s glove.
- Leon Draisaitl got Edmonton on the board at 13:54 of the middle frame, taking a return pass from Connor McDavid and sliding the puck through Karel Vejmelka.
- Utah restored its two-goal cushion only 23 seconds later. Cooley drove the blue paint, got to Vincent Trocheck’s backhand pass and lifted it past Levi at 14:17.
Cooley finished with a goal and an assist, while Nick Schmaltz contributed two assists. Vejmelka stopped 21 shots for Utah.
Oilers finally take a regulation loss
Edmonton entered the night at 5-0-1 and as the NHL’s only club yet to lose in regulation. The Oilers had won each of their previous five games, but could not erase Utah’s second-period push.
Draisaitl’s goal also kept McDavid’s season-opening production rolling. His assist extended his point streak to seven games, with four goals and 14 assists over that span.
Shakir Mukhamadullin made it a one-goal game at 1:40 of the third period. His point shot changed direction off Mammoth defenseman Andrew Peeke’s skate before finding the net. It was Mukhamadullin’s first Edmonton goal since arriving in the July 1 trade with the San Jose Sharks.
Levi made 20 saves in the Edmonton net. The Oilers pressed for an equalizer late, but Keller put the game away into the empty cage with 28 seconds remaining.
Next puck drop
There will not be much time for Edmonton to sit with the loss. The Oilers head to Utah for the rematch on Saturday, when the Mammoth will look to stretch their winning streak to four.
