Clearlake Takes Full Control of Chelsea as Todd Boehly Steps Down

In west London, Chelsea’s ownership has been reshaped again. Clearlake Capital Group has bought out its fellow investors to take full control of the club, while Todd Boehly is leaving the chairmanship he held after the 2022 takeover.

Chelsea ownership passes fully to Clearlake as Boehly steps down

The American technology investment group was already part of Chelsea’s ownership structure but has now acquired the stakes held by Boehly, Mark Walter and Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss. The deal places Clearlake in sole control of the English club.

Quick facts

  • Clearlake Capital Group has purchased the shares held by Chelsea’s other three owners.
  • Todd Boehly will leave his role as Chelsea chairman.
  • Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss have also sold their stakes.
  • Chelsea says its daily operations, leadership and sporting strategy will not change.
  • During Boehly’s four years in charge, Chelsea won the 2024-25 Conference League and the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Boehly led the ownership group that bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022. His tenure brought major investment and a period of rapid change at Stamford Bridge, ending with two trophies in 2025: the Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

In his farewell statement, Boehly said it had been an honour to serve as chairman and thanked the Premier League, Chelsea’s coaches, players, staff and supporters. He also praised the partnership between the ownership group and the investments made in pursuit of both immediate results and longer-term stability.

“I am confident Chelsea is strongly placed to keep succeeding under Clearlake’s leadership,” Boehly said.

The club has stressed that the boardroom transaction will not alter its day-to-day running, senior leadership or overall strategy. For Chelsea, the change is presented as an ownership consolidation rather than a new sporting direction.
