In Copenhagen, where Portugal’s Nations League camp was meant to settle into its final rhythm, Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure has instead left a disciplinary mark that now stretches into November. The Portuguese Football Federation has imposed a 30-day suspension on the 41-year-old captain, together with a €255 fine, after he left the national-team group on 30 September following a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus.
The disagreement followed Portugal’s 2-1 match against Norway in Oslo on 27 September. Ronaldo had not been used in that game and later maintained that his frustration came from being asked to warm up for around half an hour without subsequently being brought onto the pitch. Three days later, he departed the squad in Denmark, one day before the Nations League fixture against the Danes.
A sanction with November still in view
Portugal’s disciplinary body opened proceedings on 9 October and placed Ronaldo under a provisional suspension before confirming the 30-day penalty. Its decision does not state precisely which matches, training camps or other federation activities are covered, nor does it clarify whether the time already served under the interim measure will count towards the final sanction.
On the calendar available to Portugal, the timing could leave Ronaldo eligible for the last two Nations League group fixtures: Denmark on 14 November and Wales in Cardiff three days later. The punishment may therefore be over before those dates arrive, but selection remains a separate matter.
That decision belongs to Jorge Jesus. With Portugal approaching the close of their group campaign, the coach must decide whether to recall the country’s captain after a public rupture that began not in a stadium, but in the quieter and more consequential surroundings of an international camp.
