Tokyo has become the next stop for Dani Gómez, the 28-year-old Spanish forward beginning the first overseas chapter of his career after joining FC Tokyo in Japan’s J1 League. The Madrid-born striker arrives free of charge following Zaragoza’s relegation and brings a varied Spanish football education to the capital, from Real Madrid’s academy to spells with Tenerife, Levante, Espanyol and Valencia.
Gómez spent the 2025/26 campaign at Zaragoza in LaLiga Hypermotion, scoring nine times across 33 appearances. He had joined the Aragonese club during the January 2025 window and was initially tied to the side until June 2028. Zaragoza’s drop to Primera Federación, however, released him from that agreement and opened the route east.
At FC Tokyo, he will wear the number 99 shirt. The club sit fifth after seven league fixtures, having collected four victories while scoring eight goals and conceding five. It is a promising position from which to pursue a season with greater ambitions in a city where the league race can quickly gather pace.
A shared target in the Japanese capital
Gómez has made clear that he sees the move as more than a change of scenery. “We all want to become champions,” he said after completing the transfer. “It will be a long journey, but we will give everything to make it happen. A strong-minded team, built through many small efforts, can reach that objective.”
The striker also spoke of his anticipation at playing in front of FC Tokyo’s supporters, saying he is eager to meet them at the stadium. For a forward whose senior career has unfolded entirely in Spain until now, the move offers a new league, a new football culture and a new role in FC Tokyo’s attempt to turn a solid opening into a sustained challenge.
