Darnell Nurse Nets First Sharks Goal to Sink Blues in Overtime

ST. LOUIS — Darnell Nurse’s first goal in a San Jose sweater ended it quickly. The defenseman slipped behind coverage, took Ivar Stenberg’s pass at the back door and scored 1:03 into overtime to send the Sharks past the St. Louis Blues 3-2 at Enterprise Center on Thursday.

  • Nurse beat Blues goalie Joel Hofer at the left post for his first San Jose goal since arriving in a July 1 trade from the Edmonton Oilers.
  • Tyler Toffoli posted a goal and an assist, while Collin Graf supplied the tying goal for San Jose (3-1-0).
  • The Sharks played a second consecutive game without captain Macklin Celebrini, who remains sidelined by a lower-body injury. San Jose was coming off a 5-0 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday.
  • Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 24 shots in his first start of the season.
  • Each of San Jose’s three wins this season has come after regulation.
  • Connor McMichael and Dillon Dube scored for St. Louis (1-2-1), which has dropped three straight since opening with a 4-0 win over Dallas.
  • Hofer made 24 saves for the Blues.
  • McMichael gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead at 3:52 of the first period. He finished a give-and-go rush with Mason McTavish by tapping the puck in at the left side of the net. It was McMichael’s second goal in two games.
  • Toffoli leveled the score at 8:48 of the second. Moments after a Sharks power play expired, he stayed with his own rebound and forced the puck inside the near post while Colton Parayko checked him.
  • Dube restored the Blues’ lead with a short-handed goal at 1:39 of the third period. On a 2-on-1, he kept the puck and beat Nedeljkovic high on the glove side for his first NHL goal since Nov. 16, 2023.
  • Graf answered at 6:05 of the third. Sam Dickinson’s centering attempt struck Blues defenseman Adam Jiricek and fell into the slot, where Graf snapped it into the upper-left corner.

San Jose carried the 2-2 game into overtime, then Nurse provided the finish. Stenberg found him alone near the crease, and Nurse converted at the near post before Hofer could slide across.
