David Silva Clarifies Supreme Sha Tin Appearance Is a One-Off Match

Hong Kong’s football calendar briefly acquired the glow of a major signing when Supreme Sha Tin announced David Silva’s arrival, only for the former Spain and Manchester City midfielder to explain that his return to the pitch will be limited to one match.

Silva, now 40 and retired for more than three years, said the club’s announcement had made the arrangement appear to be a season-long contract. Speaking on Spanish radio, he said he had been surprised by the reaction after reports portrayed the deal as a full transfer.

“It is only for one game,” Silva explained, adding that it will be a league fixture rather than a longer comeback. “They presented it as though I had signed for the season, and it has made for quite an afternoon.”

The Canary Islander said the proposal appealed because of the destination as much as the chance to compete again. He has visited Hong Kong frequently through a friend and described the city as a place he likes. For one night, he will step back into match action with the aim of performing well rather than reopening a professional career that ended after his injury-enforced retirement.

Silva also addressed speculation around the financial motives behind the appearance, after some observers suggested he might need the money. He dismissed that idea with humour, saying people were quick to draw conclusions. He credited his father and his adviser for helping him make successful investments over many years, adding that his finances are in good order.

For Supreme Sha Tin, the occasion still brings an internationally recognised name to their league match. For Silva, it is a short sporting detour in a familiar city, not the start of a new season in Hong Kong.
