Dortmund Blow Two-Goal Lead as Bremen Snatch Late 2-2 Draw

Borussia Dortmund let a 2-0 lead slip late against Werder Bremen on Friday, drawing 2-2 after controlling most of the match. The result recalled Dortmund’s 3-2 home defeat to Bremen in August 2022, when another two-goal advantage disappeared.

  • Dortmund led 2-0 until the 88th minute.
  • Werder Bremen scored twice late on to secure a 2-2 draw.
  • Niko Kovac said Dortmund had created chances, controlled the opponent and then handed Bremen a route back through “two avoidable mistakes”.
  • Nico Schlotterbeck said Dortmund had spent 88 minutes in Bremen’s half against a deep defence.
  • Schlotterbeck said the side had to defend better after Bremen’s first goal.
  • A win would have taken Dortmund to 15 points. They left with one.

What it changes in the Bundesliga week

Dortmund lose ground rather than collect the three points their display appeared to merit. Kovac did not want to turn the finish into a major issue, noting that free-kicks can find the net and possession can be lost.

Still, the coach accepted that his team had surrendered the game themselves. Schlotterbeck also pointed to the missed opportunity: Dortmund had managed the match well until the late collapse, but the final minutes altered the feeling around an otherwise dominant performance.
